AE Live (AE) was delighted to hear the news that BBC Sport’s presentation of the 2018 FIFA World Cup has won its second accolade in recent months, after securing the ‘Best Sports Programme’ award at the prestigious Broadcast Awards 2019.
The Broadcast Awards ceremony, which is held annually, is one of the most hotly anticipated events in the television industry calendar, recognising and rewarding the UK’s most ground-breaking and successful content, creators and channels. The various categories are judged by some of the industry’s biggest names, and reward creativity, quality and originality.
BBC Sport won the award thanks mainly to its innovative 360-degree studio environment based in Moscow, which AE played a key role in the delivery of. The main studio was augmented with a virtual reality set extension, which gave a fully-immersive feel for the audience at home. The studio also included a range AR content and two LED monitors acting as virtual windows displaying graphical representations of Moscow.
The judges praised the overall studio presentation and high-quality broadcast, describing it as “wonderfully crafted and classy, highlighting the atmosphere and passion of the biggest stage in world sport”.
BBC Sport’s World Cup studio faced fierce competition, with five other strong nominees shortlisted for the category of ‘Best Sports Programme/. AE is extremely proud to have also been involved in two of the other shortlisted programmes, which included Sky Sports’ coverage of Alastair Cook’s final test match and BBC Sport’s host broadcast of Scotland’s Calcutta Cup victory against England during the 2018 Six Nations Championship.
As already alluded to, this is BBC Sport’s second award for their FIFA World Cup coverage from Russia last summer, having already picked up SVG Europe’s award for ‘Outstanding Technical Achievement, Graphics’ in September. John Murphy, BBC Sport Creative Director, said “We’re really proud of what we were able to produce in Moscow last year and the fact we’re picking up awards months after the event is a massive compliment to the team. This really was a team effort and AE played a key role in helping us achieve what we did”.
Stuart Coles, Chief Commercial Officer of AE said, “We’re extremely proud to be an integral part of our clients’ production, especially at such high-profile events. It’s fantastic to see our partners collecting awards for projects that we have collaborated on, it shows us that all the hard work has paid off”.
